Mike Moffatt Director, Policy & Research

Mike Moffatt serves as Canada 2020’s Director of Policy & Research, handling the organization’s original research agenda and policy positions.

In addition to his role at Canada 2020, Mike Moffatt is an Assistant Professor in the Business, Economics and Public Policy group at Ivey Business School, Western University. In 2017, Mike was the Chief Innovation Fellow for the Government of Canada, advising Deputy Ministers on innovation policy and emerging trends. His has also previously held the titles of Interim Director of the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management and Chief Economist for the Mowat Centre at the University of Toronto. Mike has worked with Canadian politicians and policy markers of all political stripes to craft more effective public policy.

Mike is a frequent commentator on public policy issues in print, on radio, and on television. He has made appearances in every English language daily newspaper in Canada, appeared on television programs from CBC’s The National to TVO’s The Agenda and has weekly appearances on two radio stations. Since 2013, Mike has had an online column that appears at Maclean’s and Canadian Business. From 2012-2013 Mike wrote for the Globe and Mail’s Economy Lab, where his piece on “the iPod tax” caused the federal government to change the regulations regarding importation of consumer electronics.

Mike has a Ph.D. in Management Science from Ivey Business School, an MA in Economics from the University of Rochester, and a combined honours B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Western University.
