We are excited to share that Dr. Michael Johns, a political scientist and professor from Laurentian University, has agreed to present a three-part series, Politics in a Time of Pandemic
June 9, 2020: A Presidential Election Unlike Anything We Have Seen Before.
This presentation will examine what a presidential election during a pandemic may look like. It will discuss the campaign strategies of both parties and examine their strengths and weaknesses. The presentation will also briefly explain the Electoral College and examine which states will be most important to watch on election night. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the down ballot races and who may control the Senate and therefore the Supreme Court.
June 16, 2020: The Erosion of Trust in 21st Century Politics.
This talk will examine the decline of trust in modern society generally and in politics specifically. The talk will discuss what happens in a democracy when people do not trust the government, experts and each other. The presentation will look at how we measure trust in a society and what these results show. The talk would conclude with a discussion of how we can improve the overall level of trust in society and the consequences if we don’t.
June 23, 2020: Globalization and World Politics.
This will be a talk on the role Globalization in all its forms (Cultural, Economic and Political) plays in modern politics. The talk will discuss issues of sovereignty and the difficulty in holding politicians accountable for issues that may or may not be out of their control. The presentation will also address anti-globalization. The talk will conclude with a discussion on how the pandemic could change the influence globalization has on international politics, both away from and toward greater global integration.
