Electoral systems are one of the most important aspects of a democracy. The system that is chosen helps determine what types of parties are elected, what type of governments are formed and as a result, what types of laws are passed. Each electoral system has advantages and disadvantages and each requires trade-offs. The system used in Canada is very rare and there are a growing number of people interested in examining alternatives. The most common system used around the democratic world is Proportional Representation (PR), where the relationship between votes cast and seats won is clearest. This presentation will introduce the audience to the families of electoral systems, with particular attention given to PR, it will then examine if such a system would be appropriate for Canada and what the ramifications would be if it moved away from the current system and towards PR.
